English title: When life stories become musical narratives. An interview study on songwriting in music therapy in the context of mental health work.
This masters thesis explores the use of songwriting in music therapy in the context of mental health work. The study has a qualitative, hermeneutic approach. It uses a thematic analysis of the data material to answer the research question: What can songwriting in music therapy offer clients within the context of mental health work? The study has gained insight into three different songwriting processes through six semi-structured research interviews with three clients and their music therapists. The data collection was inspired by Stimulated Recall Interview method.
The thematic analysis resulted in four main themes, each underpinned by two sub-themes 1) working with life stories, processing of experiences, and new elements to one’s life story, 2) music for emotions, authenticity and regulation, 3) a multiple relationship, song as interaction and an authentic relationship, and 4) challenges and opportunities, challenges that limit and challenges that provide opportunities.
The results suggest that songwriting can offer clients’ life stories a renewed form, hence, a musical narrative. The clients’ songs also evoke emotions in both the music therapist and the client, and connected the two of them in the therapeutic relationship. Furthermore, songwriting can also provide access to new strategies for handling the client’s emotions.
