The voice is an important instrument in music therapy, but a lot of the literature is found outside the border of the field and should therefore be charted out. This thesis examines Norsk psykomotorisk fysioterapi, toning and Roy Hart Theatre in order to answering the following problem: How is the connection between bodily tensions and use of voice/breathing being understood in three selected approaches, and upon what do they build their understanding? This is examined through a qualitative literature study and these methodological tools are used: hermeneutic spiral, a literature-guide, a self-inquiry and the model called the three of science (Petzold H. G., 2004). The approaches are presented in regard of origin, goals, content, education, research and theory as well as problematic aspects. An analysis and discussion of topics on the practical-, theoretical-, and meta-theoretical level shows some complex connections. This is important for interdisciplinary collaboration and it provides some practical consequences for therapeutic work with the voice. The main points in the conclusion are: * Muscular tensions, in form of blockades, may be changed through the use of voice and breathing. It is a close connection between these two. * The understanding of this connection, in the three approaches, is mostly build upon experience as well as a broad spectrum of theories. * The approaches look upon the human as an entirety, but there is uncertainty of whether they are humanistic, naturalistic, etc. * NPMF and toning can be linked to an empowerment philosophy and a resource orientation, while it is unclear whether RHT may be linked to this or not. * These are complex systems, so we must tolerate ambiguity and non-reductionistic answers.no_NO
