Abstract. - In this study, my aim has been to map how teachers teach ear training, from a selection of upper secondary schools with a music programme. As basis for this mapping, I have asked myself the following question: How is the main subject area of ear training taught under the LK06 National Curriculum, and what central elements contribute to the shaping of this teaching? Through this question, I seek new and more profound knowledge about the subject of ear training in upper secondary education. To answer this question, and to focus on relevant aspects of the eartraining subject, my starting point has been previous research, the subject’s history, curriculum theory and didactic theory. This basis of theory, together with the collected data, forms the background and point of reference for this study. As method for collecting data, I have chosen qualitative interviews. The origin for this choice was that as a scientist, I wanted to be in close contact with the objects of this study, and their descriptions of their teaching practice in ear training. The interview is, like an ordinary, everyday talk, a situation that makes dialogue, interaction and the development of knowledge possible. I collected the empirical data by interviewing eight teachers at music programme schools from various counties in Norway. These interviews were transcribed, and then analysed. As tools for the analysis, I used pedagogical categories. For further structure and analysis classification, I have made tables and codes. This study is based on hermeneutical scientific theory, understood in this context as a scientific method to gain deeper understanding. This understanding is sought by the interpretation and knowledge of how the teachers of ear training teach their subject, based on their opinions, thoughts and reflections. The results of this study reveals that the current teaching of ear training in upper secondary schools is done in a traditional way. The traditional teaching of ear training is based on a threepart body of melody, rhythm and harmonics. As teaching activities dictate, rhythm reading and prima vista singing is frequently used. Development and innovation in this subject is seen in the use of traditional ear training and digital tools. Of the elements contributing to the shaping of this teaching, the results show that the demand for evaluation in upper secondary schools affects the form and content of the teaching considerably. The teaching is also affected by the competence of the teachers, and by the access to teaching resources. Teaching is shaped by how the teachers view their subject, and ear training as a subject appears as a practical subject, a theoretical subject, a subject of skill and as a subject of maturation.nb_NO
