H ABSTRACT --- This master thesis explores the use of voluntary group music therapy at a non-profit and nongovernmental substance abuse treatment facility in Norway. The thesis is the written result of a fieldwork-based research project at the mentioned facility. Following the completion of the therapy sessions, four of the participants were interviewed regarding the project through semistructured interviews. The thesis focuses both on conveying the participants’ experiences of the project, and to connect their experiences to established theory on substance abuse treatment, recovery and music therapy. The research design being applied is qualitative method with hermeneutic and phenomenological approach, and interpretative phenomenological analysis was used for the interviews. Findings from the interview analysis have been divided into four main categories: community, well-being, challenge and mastery. Results show that the music therapy has provided its participants with valuable experiences, where their acquired experiences were strongly influenced by the community in which the therapy was conducted. Whether the participants’ experiences can be linked to recovery in substance abuse treatment, is the central theme of discussion in this study.nb_NO
