3 Kva for utfordringar opplever deltakarane i musikkgruppa? Vidare opplevde ungdommane meistring i musikkgruppa.
English summary --- Unaccompanied refugee minors are people under the age of 18 who took flight from their homeland in the absence of an escorting parent or guardian. They are people at risk who are especially vulnerable to developing mental health related issues. This study explores the role of music in the work of promoting health amongst unaccompanied refugee minors. The primary question this study seeks to answer is: In what way can participation in a music group promote health for youth who were unaccompanied refugee minors? Three research questions emerge from the overall problem: 1 How do participators experience their contribution and participation in the music group? 2 What health-promoting factors are revealed through the participants’ experiences? 3 What challenges do the youth encounter in the music group? In order to explore the issues and research questions, a group of youth who came to Norway as unaccompanied refugee children was invited to participate in a music group. The music groups were led by two music therapists, one of whom conducted research for this study. The group met for sessions approximately once a week over a period of ten months. These sessions had variable formats consisting of improvisation, interplay of various instruments, instrumental education and song. The regimen also included a concert by invitation as well as recording in a studio. The music therapists emphasized cooperation and codetermination in the group dynamics. In conglomeration with the youth, they explored and experienced music and as a unit the group collectively chose music they wished to explore, set goals they wanted to see accomplished, and evaluated group sessions. One of the goals of this study is to demonstrate how music can be a means by which we can engage people and create cross-cultural contact that can foster integration and self-confidence and in turn promote good health and quality of life for the participants. The study does this by depicting a practice in a music group, exploring this through interview and observation, and discussing the results from the research with reference to theoretical perspectives. The study also aims to develop knowledge about the links between music and health, which ideally will help more children and young people with refugee background gain access to music. The hope is that by focusing on and attaining more knowledge about the benefits of music therapy, can lead to more music therapy programs being offered in asylum centers and child welfare contexts. It is to this overarching, idealistic and long-term end that the study strives for. The study is a community music therapy project which explores the relationship between music and health in the context of a given music group. This study is grounded in Norwegian music therapy tradition, where a humanistic, resource and community-oriented perspective on music therapy forms the academic baseline. These perspectives are part of the study’s theoretical frame of reference and reflect the researcher’s own preconceived convictions. They laid the groundwork for the music therapists’ approach to the music group and its participants. In addition to music therapy perspectives, the theoretical reference framework of the study includes positive psychology, recognition theory, traumainformed care, and theory of psycho-social work with unaccompanied refugee minors. The results from the analysis are discussed in light of these perspectives and the research questions are treated through an dialogue between theory and empirical study. The findings of this study stem from qualitative research, wherein participant observation and interviews are the primary research methods for data collection .The interviews have been analyzed via systematic text condensation and the field notes from the participatory observation through category-based analysis. The study takes into consideration hermeneutics and phenomenology; human experience is recognized as valid knowledge, and interpretation is a central dimension in knowledge-building. The study’s first research question examines the youth’s experiences from the music group. The results indicate that the youth experienced positive emotions when participating in the group, experiencing more energy and joy and less fatigue and depression. The youth experienced that the music was a welcome distraction from an otherwise overactive mind and stress; the music group provided an environment where they could focus on music and lay aside any negative thoughts for awhile. The music had, therefore, a diverting function. The youth also gleaned a more optimistic view of their future and life situation through their participation, wherein music became a catalyst for hope. In addition, the young people experienced satisfaction, self-confidence and achieved competence in the music group. Security within the group as well as supportive relationships enabled the young people to develop faith in their own abilities and grow in self-confidence. It challenged them to enter into new ways of interacting with music and pushed them to discover resources and new-found potential from within themselves. The youth also experienced a sense of belonging which came through the music encountered in the music group. This stemmed from a sense of belonging to both their country of origin and to Norway, as well as to the fellowship in the music group. Concerning the first level of belonging, the results show that the music had a confirming function with regards to the youth’s identity and experience of belonging to their homeland. Often the music reminded the young people of their homelands, which had varying emotional responses- both good and painful. The youth’s identities and affiliations to their homelands were recognized amongst their group peers. When it comes to the second level of belonging, the music fostered the young people’s growing sense of Norwegian adherence. Through the exchange of cultural music and the interrelational group dynamics, the music group played s positive role in the young people’s integration process. When it comes to the third level of belonging, the youth were able to participate in a safe and positive group environment, a fellowship in which they encountered recognition, support and meaning. The study’s second research question gets at the health implications of the youth’s experiences. The positive experiences the young people achieve can all be seen through a health perspective. Trauma- informed care, resilience perspective, positive psychology, the resource-oriented perspective on music therapy, and the theory of psycho-social work with unaccompanied refugee minors, are all perspectives in the theoretical basis for the study. These perspectives all convey something about what builds resources, resistance and health in people. The youth’s experiences from the music group can, in the light of this study’s application of theoretical perspectives, be understood as health promotion. When it comes to the third research question concerning what the youth find challenging in the music group, the analysis’ findings indicate two challenges: Firstly, they experienced a certain uneasiness that the music group would one day come to an end. Secondly, they experienced frustration over a lack of opportunity to practice and thus they did not get the musical development they had hoped for. In the analysis process and in organizing the results of the study, three categories were constructed: the music group as an environment for emotional change; the music group as an environment for meistring1; and the music group as a venue for experiencing belonging. These three categories have furthermore attached themes that reflect the participants’ experiences from the music group. In the category the music group as an environment for emotional change are the themes of music as diversion, music as a source of positive emotions, and music as a road to a changed and expanded mindset. The category the music group as an environment for meistring includes the theme of a changed and expanded mindset and the importance of relationship. The importance of intergroup relations is a recurring theme which belongs to all three categories. Internal group relations, by which is meant the quality of these relations, are interpreted as a premise by which the participants can experience emotional change, achieved competence and belonging in the music group. The category music group as a venue for experiencing belonging includes the themes belonging to the homeland, belonging to Norway, and belonging to the group community. Despite the fact that the different themes are organized into three categories, the themes and categories are to be understood as interrelated. The youth experienced meistring and belonging in the music group. These were experiences that created positive emotions in them, emotions such as joy, interest and satisfaction. These positive experiences and emotions diverted turmoil and mental overactivity and they changed and broadened the participants’ way of thinking. This resulted in a more optimistic and positive view of the individual’s life situation and future, and led to personal change in their self-esteem with greater faith in their personal abilities. This means that the young people experienced an emotional change that came through their participation in the music group. There was thus a sequence of related events and experiences which led to an overall emotional change in the youth. The coherence of these themes resonates with the study’s view of music and of people. Mankind is regarded as an acting and experiencing subject. Music is considered a social activity, and it is within the context of shared experiences that meaning occurs. Its meaning is therefore understood as both subject-dependent and context-dependent. Music offers opportunities for people, with their ingrained perceptiveness, to latch on to and exploit. People can benefit, experience and engage music in ways that provide health. All the topics worked out in the analysis are possibilities that the youth perceived and benefited through the music. These experiences have, by the help of the study’s theoretical framework, been interpreted in a health perspective. The results of the study and the discussion of these results, tell us therefore something about the role of music in health promotion work amongst unaccompanied refugee minors.nb_NO
