This Master`s thesis examines how five parents experience receptive music therapy in a family-based inpatient treatment for adolescents with eating disorders. Breathing Space in Music is an existing form of group music therapy that is available for parents. It involves guided relaxation, listening to selected music, and conversations about the experiences based on the music therapy method: Guided Imagery and Music (GIM). The research question in focus in this thesis is: How can Breathing Space in Music support parents? To answer this question, a qualitative study was conducted that used participant observation and semi-structured interviews for data collection and systematic text condensation (STC) as the analysis method. Systemic and relational perspectives connected to the particular parent-situation and the notion of music as health are presented. This provides a contextual and conceptual framework for interpretation and further discussion of the results. The analysis led to the articulation of three categories of support that this type of therapy offers to the parents: relation, regulation and reflection. The results indicate that Breathing Space in Music can create a sense of security, offer enjoyable experiences and provide a place with a sense of freedom. It can also regulate distress and stimulate reflections able to activate patience and motivation. The parents involved in the study all experienced ecological principles of interrelationship and interdependence in the music therapy and described positive ripple effects out to their interactions with their child and the treatment. The study illustrates the complexity in how music can make a positive difference and create intersubjectivity in a given relational context.
