Musikkterapiens muligheter i det kognitive arbeidet i pedriatri. En kvalitativ studie om musikkterapiens muligheter for barn og unge med kognitive utfordringer i kreftbehandling

Abstract

Sammendrag - Denne masteroppgaven undersøker musikkterapiens relevans og virkning i kognitiv trening hos barn og unge i kreftbehandling. Formålet med studie er å få mer kunnskap og forståelse over hvor sentralt arbeidet med kognisjon er blant musikkterapeuter i pediatri, og nytteverdien av kognisjonsarbeidet. Dermed søker denne oppgaven svar på to følgende spørsmål i problemstillingen: På hvilken måte kan musikkterapi bidra til å styrke kognitiv funksjon hos barn og unge i kreftbehandling? Er det fokus på kognisjonsarbeid blant musikkterapeuter i pediatrien i Norge i dag? Det første spørsmålet blir besvart i lys av utvalgte teoretiske områdene; kognitiv funksjon, musikken og nevroplastisiteten, nevrologisk musikkterapi: musikk og hjernen, nevrologisk musikkterapi: modeller i NMT, og biopsykososiale perspektiv i musikkterapi. Studien har et kvalitativt forskningsdesign med en hermeneutisk og fenomenologisk tilnærming, inkludert bruk av semi-strukturerte intervjuer med tre musikkterapeuter innen pediatri for å besvare det andre spørsmålet i problemstillingen. Ved bruk av en tematisk analyse, endte det med tre hovedkategorier og totalt syv underkategorier: 1. Musikkterapi som motivator til læring og endring (underkategori: felles oppmerksomhet, og fantasi og lek), 2. Musikkterapi som brobygger mellom det unormale og normale (underkategori: her og nå øyeblikk, bygge resiliens, og familieorientering og det tverrfaglige) og til slutt hovedkategorien 3. Ikke et fokus (underkategori: kartlegging av kognisjon og nytteverdien av et kognitivt arbeid i pediatrien). Disse kategoriene er blitt drøftet opp mot teoretiske kunnskapsgrunnlag innen nevrologisk musikkterapi, nevroplastisitet, og biopsykososialt perspektiv i musikkterapi. Abstract - The master's thesis explores the relevance, and the impact of music therapy in cognitive functions with children and adolescents in cancer treatment. The aim of this study is to gain knowledge of how essential working with cognition is for music therapist in pediatrics, and the utility value of this work. Thus, seeks this thesis answers to the two following research questions: How can music therapy help to strengthen cognitive function in children and adolescence in cancer treatment? Is enhancing cognition a focal point among music therapists in pediatrics in Norway today? The first question is explored and answered through current literature and theory within cognitive functions, music and neuroplasticity, neurological music therapy: music and the brain, neurological music therapy: models in NMT, and biopsychosocial perspective in music therapy. This study has a qualitative research design, and a hermeneutic and phenomenological approach, with the use of semi-structured interviews among three music therapists in pediatrics to seek answers to the second question in the issue above. With the use of a thematic analysis, it led to three main categories and a total of seven subcategories: 1. Music therapy as a motivator for learning and change (subcategory: joint attention, and imagination and play), 2. Music therapy as bridge between the abnormal and normal (subcategory: being in the here and now, building resilience, and family orientation and the interdisciplinarity) and finally the main category 3. Not the main goal (subcategory: cognitive map and the value of working with cognition in pediatrics). These categories are discussed based on theories of neurological music therapy, neuroplasticity, and the biopsychosocial perspective in music therapy.
