Musikkterapeuten og hennes hovedinstrument - En intervjustudie

Abstract

SUMMARY The master thesis «The music therapist and her primary instrument» is an empirical, qualitative interview study about the music therapist’s relation to her primary instrument. This includes a look upon theories about the music therapist’s identity, body, and the different qualities of musical instruments. The purpose of this thesis is to examine how music therapists from different therapeutic practices describes their relation to their primary instrument, what they tell about use of the primary instrument and what they tell about potential use of other instruments. To answer the research questions, I have conducted semi–structured interviews with six music therapists, processed an interpretative phenomenological analysis of the research material and looked upon it as an instrumental case study. My analysis results in six main themes: identity, the music therapy education, contact, context, repercussions and the inherent strengths and weaknesses of musical instruments. I argue that this topicality needs to be raised in music therapy both to emphasize the importance of musical self-care for the music therapist and to attend to the interests of the client. Through gathering and discussing the six main themes from the results and presented theories I conclude that the therapist is in attentive contact. The music therapist is simultaneously in contact both inward and outward, and everything she does, has repercussions that characterizes her relationship with her primary instrument. Masteroppgaven «Musikkterapeuten og hennes hovedinstrument» er en empirisk, kvalitativ intervjustudie som tar for seg musikkterapeutens forhold til eget hovedinstrument. Her inngår det å se på teorier om musikkterapeutens identitet, kropp og musikkinstrumenters ulike kvaliteter. Formålet med oppgaven er å undersøke hvordan musikkterapeuter i ulike musikkterapeutiske praksiser beskriver sitt forhold til hovedinstrumentet, hva de forteller om bruk av hovedinstrumentet og eventuell bruk av andre instrumenter. For å svare på forskningsspørsmålene har jeg gjennomført semistrukturerte intervjuer med seks musikkterapeuter, bearbeidet datamaterialet med en fortolkende fenomenologisk analyse og sett på datamaterialet som en instrumentell case. Min analyse resulterer i seks hovedtemaer: identitet, musikkterapiutdannelsen, kontakt, kontekst, ringvirkninger og instrumenters iboende styrker og svakheter. Jeg argumenterer for å heve temaets aktualitet i musikkterapi både for å belyse viktigheten av musikalsk selvomsorg for musikkterapeutens virke og for å ivareta klientens interesser. Gjennom sammenfatning og drøfting av resultatenes seks hovedtemaer og den presenterte teorien kommer jeg fram til at musikkterapeuten er i oppmerksom kontakt. Musikkterapeuten er i kontakt både innover og utover på en og samme tid, og alt hun gjør, gir ringvirkninger som preger hennes forhold til hovedinstrumentet.
